Sagar Dhakal is primarily a bowling specialist. As a slow left-arm orthodox spinner, he relies on flight, drift, and turn rather than raw pace, using variations in the air and off the pitch to build pressure in the middle overs. He bats right-handed, usually lower down the order, and is regarded more as a containing and wicket-taking bowler than a genuine batting all-rounder.

His domestic performances suggest he is capable of running through a lineup on responsive surfaces — his List A and franchise records include multiple four and five-wicket hauls. At international level, his numbers so far have been modest, reflecting the tougher standard of associate-level white-ball cricket and his still-developing role within Nepal's bowling attack.

He is not a designated captain at any level of his career based on currently available records, and his primary value to his teams comes from his bowling craft rather than a leadership role.

Dhakal was introduced to cricket as a child through family interest in the sport and joined a cricket academy in Kathmandu around 2014. He was encouraged to develop as a left-arm spinner rather than purely as a batter, a shift that shaped the rest of his career. He represented Nepal at Under-19 level, including in the 2019 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup and related age-group qualifying events.

He made his senior domestic debut for Province Number 3 in the 2018 Prime Minister Cup, Nepal's premier List A tournament. He also featured for Chitwan Tigers in the Everest Premier League from 2018 onward, one of Nepal's earlier T20 franchise competitions, before that league gave way to the Nepal Premier League in 2024.

Dhakal represents Province Number 3 in Nepal's inter-provincial competitions, including the Prime Minister Cup and other domestic events. He also plays for Nepal Police Club, one of the departmental teams in Nepali domestic cricket, in tournaments such as the Jay Trophy. His departmental contract with the Police Club has been an important part of his professional cricket career.

Dhakal was named in Nepal's T20I squad for the 2021–22 Oman Quadrangular Series and made his T20I debut on 11 February 2022 against Oman. He was also named in Nepal's ODI squad for the 2022 United Arab Emirates Tri-Nation Series and made his ODI debut on 16 March 2022, for Nepal against Papua New Guinea.

In May 2024, he was named in Nepal's squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, marking his first appearance in a global ICC tournament. Since his debut, he has continued to be part of Nepal's wider white-ball pool, though he has rotated in and out of the playing XI depending on conditions and team combination.

Dhakal has been part of the Pokhara Avengers franchise since the NPL's first season in 2024, playing alongside marquee player Kushal Bhurtel. He has featured as a bowling option in the middle overs, though he has not been a guaranteed starter in every match across the tournament's first two seasons.

NPL 2024 (inaugural season): Bought by Pokhara Avengers for NPR 1.5 million as a Category A player.

NPL 2025: Retained by Pokhara Avengers ahead of the season's mini-auction, alongside marquee player Kushal Bhurtel and other retained squad members.

NPL 2026: Retained again as part of Pokhara Avengers' core squad ahead of the season, which is scheduled to run from 17 November to 13 December 2026.
