Gautam is a right-hand top-order batter whose reputation was built in age-group cricket, where he twice became the first Nepali player to score centuries in a single format bracket — once at U16 level and again at U19 level. His batting is built around occupying the crease and building an innings, a style reflected in his domestic 50-over numbers, where he has posted a fifty and multiple 30-plus scores in a small sample of matches.

In franchise T20 cricket with Karnali Yaks, he has largely been a squad member behind an experienced top order, giving him limited playing-XI opportunities so far. He is occasionally used as a change bowler, though wicket-taking has not been a significant part of his output at senior level. Franchise coaches have valued him more for his composure against the new ball and his fielding than for a specific power-hitting or spin-bowling skill set.

Gautam's rise began in Nepal's age-group system. Playing for Nepal U16, he made an unbeaten 106 against Myanmar at the U-16 Eastern Region Tournament in 2017. Two years later, leading Nepal U19, he struck a century as Nepal thrashed Singapore by 217 runs in the ACC U-19 Eastern Region tournament at Kinrara Oval, Kuala Lumpur — a knock that made him the first Nepali cricketer to score centuries at both U-16 and U-19 level. He captained the Nepal U19 side, including in fixtures against India and an MCC touring team.

In 2022, seeking exposure outside Nepal, Gautam signed with Geyser City Cricket Club in New Zealand to play a full season of Premier Cricket, the country's top club competition — a six-month stint intended to sharpen his game against a different style of bowling.

At home, Gautam has represented Bagmati Province and Pokhara Rhinos in Nepal's provincial one-day and T20 structures. In the 2023 KP Oli Cup — the inaugural edition of Nepal's domestic T20 tournament — he was the tournament's leading run-scorer, finishing with 170 runs for Bagmati Province. His domestic 50-over (List A-style) numbers show 104 runs from five innings at an average of over 20, including a highest score of 54, while his domestic T20 record outside the NPL stands at 116 runs from 11 innings with a best of 43.

Gautam has not yet represented Nepal's senior national side; his representative career to date has been at the U16 and U19 levels, where he captained Nepal U19.

Gautam entered the Nepal Premier League at its inception in 2024, signed by Karnali Yaks in Category B of the player auction. He remained with the franchise as the team reached the Eliminator in NPL 2024. Karnali Yaks retained him for NPL 2025.

Rit Gautam has not captained a senior domestic or franchise team; his captaincy experience is limited to age-group cricket, where he led the Nepal U19 team, including in series against India and an MCC touring side. No senior-level captaincy statistics are publicly available.
