Alam is best described as a disciplined, accuracy-first medium-pace bowler rather than an out-and-out strike bowler. He typically operates as a support or sixth-bowler option, mixing cutters and change-of-pace deliveries rather than express pace, and looks to build pressure through economy.

With the bat, Alam bats in the lower-middle order and is used as a finisher capable of hitting through the innings' closing overs. His most notable recent innings came against Biratnagar Kings on November 22, 2025, when he struck an unbeaten 48 off just 25 balls, including four fours and two sixes, to drag Kathmandu Gorkhas to a competitive total. Alam developed an interest in cricket at a young age, playing in local and district-level tournaments in Madhesh Province. His performances in school-level and district competitions earned him recognition from provincial coaches and selectors. He went on to represent Nepal's under-19 side at the 2021 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup, where he picked up three wickets and scored 57 runs across three matches.

Alam made his domestic debut at age 16, on January 9, 2020, for Province No. 2 (now Madhesh Province) in the Manmohan Memorial National One Day Cup 2019/20, playing two matches in that debut appearance. He has continued to represent Madhesh Province in Nepal's structured provincial competitions since.

Alam made his T20I debut on March 31, 2022, against Papua New Guinea (cap 41), having been named in Nepal's squad for the 2021–22 Nepal T20I Tri-Nation Series. He followed this with a List A debut on May 6, 2022, against Zimbabwe A, and an ODI debut on June 11, 2022, against the USA (cap 32) during the 2019–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 window; his last recorded ODI was against Namibia on July 16, 2022.

His T20I career has continued well beyond that initial run: after his comeback, Nepal recalled him for a T20I series against the West Indies in Sharjah in September 2025, and he went on to feature in Nepal's 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup Asia & EAP Qualifier matches against Qatar and Oman in October 2025 — his most recent recorded T20I appearance, per ESPNcricinfo, came against Oman at Al Amerat on October 15, 2025.

As of April 2026, The Kathmandu Post reported that Alam had represented Nepal in six ODIs and eight T20Is in total. He was not selected for Nepal's squad at the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, reportedly due to a lean patch of form.

Before his NPL move, Alam played in the Nepal T20 League 2022–23 season for Janakpur Royals — the same tournament (held December 24, 2022 to January 11, 2023) during which the spot-fixing case that derailed his career originated.

Alam's NPL story is inseparable from his off-field comeback. On January 23, 2023, he was one of three cricketers arrested by Nepal's Central Investigation Bureau on allegations of spot-fixing, including claims of intentionally bowling no-balls, during the Nepal T20 League. He was suspended from the game as the case proceeded.

In March 2024, the Kathmandu District Court acquitted him, citing insufficient evidence. The Cricket Association of Nepal's Integrity Committee reviewed the case afterward, and on May 5, 2025, CAN officially lifted his suspension, clearing him to return to domestic and international cricket.

His return to the game was immediate and headline-grabbing: at the NPL Season 2 (2025) mini-auction in August 2025, all eight franchises placed the maximum permitted bid for Alam — making him the only player that year to draw a maximum bid from every team. The tie was broken by a lucky draw, which Kathmandu Gorkhas won, signing him for Rs 15 lakh (1.5 million Nepali rupees).

Alam went on to play a regular role in Kathmandu Gorkhas' middle order through the 2025 season, featuring in matches against Janakpur Bolts, Biratnagar Kings, Sudurpaschim Royals, Karnali Yaks, Chitwan Rhinos, Pokhara Avengers, and Lumbini Lions. His standout contribution was the unbeaten 48 off 25 balls against Biratnagar Kings on November 22, 2025. Kathmandu Gorkhas' campaign ended at the Eliminator stage, where they lost to Lumbini Lions by four wickets at Tribhuvan University Ground on December 10, 2025; Alam was dismissed for 18 in that match.

Ahead of NPL Season 3 (2026), Kathmandu Gorkhas confirmed they had retained Alam as part of their core group, alongside marquee player Karan KC, Bhim Sharki, Rashid Khan, Shahab Alam, and Santosh Yadav — meaning he did not go back into the 2026 auction pool.
