CAN Set to Confirm DRS for NPL Season 3, Formal Announcement Expected by Monday

October 18, 2026

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is expected to make a formal announcement on the introduction of the Decision Review System (DRS) in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) by Monday, 19 October 2026. CAN Secretary Paras Khadka confirmed that preparations have reached the final stage and that full details would be released by Monday.

Speaking at a press conference on 17 October at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, Khadka said, "Discussions about implementing DRS in NPL are going on. Formal information on this will be provided by Monday.” The statement followed ICC recognition of the third edition of the NPL, which runs from 26 October to 21 November 2026.

CAN has tested technology from two companies and is evaluating accuracy, reliability, and suitability for a domestic league. A full international-standard DRS system has been ruled out because of cost and resource constraints, but officials have indicated that a workable system can still be introduced for the first time in NPL history.

The estimated cost is between Rs 15 million and Rs 20 million. CAN and the eight franchises plan to share the expense, with the amount adjusted against the 50 percent commercial media rights revenue share so that no single party bears the full burden.

The introduction of DRS is likely to affect match timings. Khadka has noted that reviews could extend games by up to 30 minutes. Matches currently scheduled to start at 4.30 pm and finish between 7.15 pm and 7.30 pm could run until 8.00–8.15 pm. Organizers are also considering earlier start times to account for colder evening conditions and dew.

The move addresses long-standing concerns over umpiring decisions in the first two NPL seasons, when disputed LBW, caught-behind, stumping, and no-ball calls generated criticism from players and supporters. Television umpires already review run-outs and stumpings; DRS would allow teams to formally challenge additional decisions.

With the tournament only eight days away, franchises and broadcasters are awaiting confirmation of whether the system will be used for the full competition or limited to the knockout stage, along with the number of reviews each side will receive and the precise technology that will be deployed.

A final decision is expected on or before 19 October. Once announced, it will give teams and match officials a clear operational framework before the opening match between defending champions Lumbini Lions and Sudurpaschim Royals on 26 October.
